Thousand of Canadians sign petition to revoke Elon Musk’s citizenship

A petition calling for the revocation of Elon Musk's Canadian citizenship has garnered hundreds of thousands of signatures amid rising tensions between the Trump administration and Canada. The petition, launched five days ago, accuses Musk of acting against Canada's national interests and undermining its sovereignty. However, under Canadian law, citizenship can only be revoked in cases of fraud, misrepresentation, or intentional concealment of information on immigration or citizenship applications. Musk, who was born in South Africa, holds dual citizenship in Canada and the United States.

In response to the petition, Musk posted on X, "Canada is not a real country," though the comment was later deleted. The petition alleges that Musk has used his wealth and influence to interfere in Canadian elections and has aligned himself with a foreign government seeking to undermine Canadian sovereignty. Musk obtained Canadian citizenship through his mother, who was born in Saskatchewan.

Since its launch on February 20, the petition has been signed by over 250,000 Canadians and will remain open for signatures until June 20. While the petition is largely symbolic and lacks legal force, those with at least 500 signatures and parliamentary backing typically receive a government response. However, this petition may not receive one due to the potential dissolution of parliament ahead of a spring election.

The petition was initiated by an author from British Columbia and has been endorsed by Charlie Angus, a New Democratic Party MP representing Timmins–James Bay. Angus, who has served in parliament for 20 years, has announced he will not seek re-election.
